INSCAPE Arts Building Opens Its Doors for a Free Summer Open Studio Event
Five floors history, art, and culture in the heart of Seattle - Sunday, June 7, 2026
SEATTLE, WA - Inscape Arts and Friends of Inscape invite the public to a free Summer Open Studio Event at the historic INSCAPE Building on Sunday, June 7, 2026, from 12 PM to 6 PM. Located at 815 Seattle Blvd S, Seattle, WA 98134, this six-hour celebration of creativity is open to all ages and free to attend. Street and free parking behind the building will be available.
Spanning five floors of history, art, and culture, the INSCAPE Building will come alive with the work of local and guest artists, live music, artisan vendors, and self-guided history tours that bring the building's storied past to life. Attendees will have the rare opportunity to explore studios, connect directly with working artists, and experience the vibrant creative community that calls INSCAPE home.
This year's event is anchored by a compelling hallway theme: 'The Butterfly Effect' - inspired by Alex Nelson’s The True Butterfly Effect Project, celebrating connection, transformation, and the ripple effects of everyday actions. The theme highlights the power of individual expression within the collective fabric of community, and the idea that small shifts can lead to profound and far-reaching change. At its heart is the monarch butterfly, a symbol long associated with immigrant rights and the border-crossing journey, representing migration and identity. In a building that once stood at the center of that very history, the theme carries meaning - a reminder that every voice, every story, and every act of creativity contribute to something larger than itself.
Featured artists include Alex Nason, Lars LaDuke, Amy Gardner, Ink by Bailee, Eleanor Doughty, Jim Rasmussen, PaTan, Chris Kudla, Emily Turner, Pudin’Tane, Patricia Kalidonis, Watermark Bindery, City Sound Wave, Jennifer Towner, Susanna Bluhm, Inye Wokoma, Mike Saroca, Roslyn Burns, Jessica Sweeney, Full Spectrum Ceramics, Susan Cole, Nate Gowdy, Kat, Nancy Hammer, Sneaky Boo, Robby White, Tara McDermott, Garima Tripathi, Sarah Pattison, Britta Johnson, Susie Frazier, Tori Shao, Maria Huang, Charles Prutting, and Brian Lane. Vendors will be on hand throughout the day.
Free refreshments and snacks will be provided, and the Mexicuban Food Truck will be on-site for those looking for a full meal. The event is family and kid-friendly - all are welcome.

About the INSCAPE Building
Built in 1932 as the United States Immigration Station and Assay Office, the INSCAPE Building has long stood at the intersection of American history and the immigrant experience. The building once processed, detained, and decided the fates of thousands of people - from those caught in the enforcement of the Chinese Exclusion Act to detentions that followed the September 11 attacks. Its original tiles, narrow hallways, and former jail cells remain intact, bearing witness to that complex legacy.
After closing in 2004, the building was reimagined with guidance from Seattle’s local immigrant community and reopened in 2010 as Inscape Arts - a hub for artists, makers, and small businesses. Today, its history is honored and shared through installations, oral histories, and a permanent exhibit curated by the Wing Luke Museum. Past and future sit side by side inside these walls, inviting reflection, creativity, and inspiration.

Today I received an email that started with - "On behalf of 4Culture, we are pleased to congratulate you on the selection of your artwork for inclusion in the King County Public Art Collection..." I am excited and honored to share that this original painting is claimed! It's one that is deeply personal to me. The story is on the painting's page of my site here - Little Blue House. I'm not sure which public building it will be in yet, but I will post when I know.

Today is the day! Come visit my studio on the east wing of the 3rd floor at Inscape Open Studios at 815 Seattle Blvd S. There's free parking in the back lot & free drinks in the lobby. Free chocolate in my room.

'Happy Hour Triptych'
Today I mailed off my 3 postcards for this year's International Postcard Show at Brassworks Gallery in Portland, OR. They don't quite fit on my main Work page because I made them into a triptych so I'm sharing them over here instead. I thought it would be fun to have the postcards all fit together as one larger piece and also still be able to be sold as intended as 3 individual pieces. The price is the same as last year - $100/each, take it with you from the opening on Dec 13th or buy online. Will they get split up or stay together?
(UPDATE 12/30/25 - The end olives are SOLD! They sold on different days so my guess is that they are split up. Only the middle olive remains at the gallery as of today.)

Big news for the second half of the year-
While I have not painted as much as I would have liked to the past couple of months, I did have 3 recent oil paintings juried into the gallery show at the Edmonds Arts Festival next month June 13th-15th! More info at https://www.edmondsartsfestival.com/ It's free to attend. This is one of the biggest art festivals here on the west coast and includes artists from WA, OR, CA, MT, and ID. I'm thrilled to have been selected.
Part of the reason for not painting as much is that I've been working out the logistics of relocating my currently tiny studio into a bigger small space. Next week, I'll be moving into the Inscape Arts Building here in Seattle! https://www.urbanworklofts.com/location/inscape/ I won't be ready for the June 8th open house but will be at subsequent ones. I'll also be available by appointment.

Spring Bud and Entrance will be part of the 50th Seattle Cherry Blossom and Japanese Cultural Festival this weekend at Seattle Center, and are available for sale there. Check out the ART50 Exhibit in the Armory Loft April 11th-13th.

My most recent painting is on view and for sale at Fogue Studios and Gallery from now until May 25th. It was juried into The Power of Color show organized by Puget Sound Group Northwest Artists. I framed it with a black stepped frame to add to the tunnel effect of the painting.

I started this year by wrapping up and organizing last year's work. All the unvarnished paintings got varnished, and all the unframed works were framed and wired for hanging. Then I corralled all the pieces onto a big gallery wall in my stairwell. It's satisfying to see everything finished and hanging nicely together.

Today I found a certificate and a check in my mailbox from Parklane Gallery in Kirkland for the Board of Director's award I received for one of my paintings. What a great way to end 2024. Wishing you all a happy, healthy, wonderful New Year!

The Annual Winter Show of Small Works at Parklane Gallery in Kirkland, WA is open! Customers can take their new pieces home right away instead of waiting for the show to end so new works will be cycling through until January 3, 2025. Online shopping is available on the gallery site too at https://parklanegallery.org/winter24/ Three of my Nature Shadows pieces are a part of this show including Hovering Hummingbird, White Butterfly on Purple, and Blue Butterfly on Orange.

Brassworks Gallery in Portland, OR shipped me blank postcards to paint on for their 2nd annual postcards show in December. I can't wait to be a part of it! I'll be making mini oil paintings of some of my favorite fruit imagery on them and will be treating them like any other canvas starting with a tinted gesso layer and sealing them with removable Gamsol varnish. Fun!

I'm testing out a blank page as a blog so I can share quick updates. I've just finished and posted a Glazed photo of my 16x20" oil painting of "Dambo's Birdhouse" that I did for fun for my own gallery wall, I've got an avocado painting commission in the works on my easel, and a nice new frame coming in the mail so I can make my "Apple Pie" painting pretty for the Schack show in September.
